2017 Mazda MX RF Review

With the New Retractable Fastback, the 2017 Mazda MX-5 Is a True 12-Month Sports Car.

Available for the first time is the Mazda MX-5 RF (retractable fastback). The latest addition to the MX-5 line fully embodies the model’s 26-year-old tradition light, agile performance. While staying true to the original MX-5 concept the addition of the Retractable Hardtop opens up the world of open-air sports car driving to individuals who otherwise need a closed car.

And the addition of the retractable Fastback doesn’t interfere with the styling of the MX-5. CTV News was quite taken with the styling of the RF, commenting that the Mazda MX-5 RF “comes with a power hardtop that turns the impressively simple MX-5 into rather stylish sports car”.

With the top up, the MX-5 RF features traditional fastback styling with a smooth roofline that slopes down to meet the rear of the car. The power roof can be opened or closed at speeds of up to 10 km/h with the press of a button. When closed the roof is stowed compactly and efficiently. In fact, the MX-5 RF offers the same amount of trunk space as the soft-top model.

Lighter, smaller, quicker, and more nimble than its predecessor, the 2017 Mazda MX-5 RF sports car has shed approximately 10 kg from its predecessor, despite the addition of the retractable top, through the use of aluminium and ultra‑high‑tensile steel. Its curb weight now stands at 1,114 kg when equipped with the six-speed manual transmission.

2017 Mazda MX-5 RF, Powered by SKYACTIV®-G Technology

The 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata RF sports car is powered by an all-aluminum SKYACTIV®-G 2.0 L DOHC four-cylinder engine with a 13.0:1 compression ratio that produces 116 kW (155 horsepower) at 6000 rpm and 200 N-m (150 lb-ft) of torque at 4000 rpm. The engine is set back behind the front axle line to help achieve the MX-5 Miata’s 50/50 weight distribution.

Another performance feature is your choice of the compact SKYACTIV®-MT six-speed manual transmission or the available six-speed SKYACTIV®-Drive automatic transmission with SPORT mode, paddle shifters and Drive Selection switch.

Two Different 2017 MX-5 RF Models from Which to Choose
