2017 Mazda MX-5 GX Roadster Review

2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata RF, Soft Top

The 2017 Mazda MX-5 engages you on every level. This legendary sports car lives on in a modern form, without forsaking the roots that made it great. You enjoy wondrous handling, fiery acceleration and supreme stopping power for a vehicle you can enjoy just as much at the track as on the road. Also, the interior features practical amenities and technologies, making this roadster anything but plain.

As the entry-level model, the Mazda MX-5 GX packs an excellent amount of value. It comes with a surprising amount of standard equipment, so you're sacrificing nothing.

Under the sleek hood is a SKYACTIV-G 2.0-litre inline four-cylinder engine with dual overhead camshafts and 16 valves. The setup is good for a maximum 155 horsepower and 148 lb.-ft. of torque. At the same time, this engine contains designs to help you conserve fuel, so you spend more time on the road and less time refuelling.

Mated to this engine is a standard Skyactiv-MT 6-speed manual transmission, which sends power to the rear wheels. If you so choose, a 6-speed automatic transmission is available as an option, complete with a manual shift mode and a drive selection switch for greater flexibility.

One of the reasons why the Mazda MX-5 handles so well is the nearly perfect weight distribution between the front and rear portions of the car. A front mid-ship engine position, plus rear-wheel drive help make such a feat possible. This design makes you, as the driver, feel more connected to the vehicle.

Mazda also made this sports car to be lighter than the previous generation. By constructing certain portions out of ultra-high-tensile steel and aluminium, engineers were able to shed 20 percent of the weight. They accomplished this without sacrificing comfort, safety or handling stability.

Clever safety designs make the Mazda MX-5 GX a vehicle you can feel confident about driving. Standard anti-lock brakes with electronic brake force distribution help bring the car to a standstill quickly during an emergency.

Other systems help keep you in control for various situations. Hill launch assist maintains brake pressure as you transfer your foot from the brake pedal to the accelerator when the car is stopped on an incline. Traction control and dynamic stability control constantly work to keep the vehicle going in the path you intend.

To protect you and passengers in a crash, the Mazda MX-5 GX has dual front and side airbags, plus side-impact door beams.

Drivers and passengers both enjoy supportive seats that are contoured to be comfortable, even during long treks. Other standard comforts for the GX model includes air conditioning, cruise control, a tilt steering wheel, power locks, power windows, remote keyless entry, removable dual cupholders, a mesh aero board windblocker and custom floor mats.

Adding to the practical nature of the car, the centre console features not only an armrest but also a lockable compartment. Covered storage on the back panel makes for a convenient place to store items.
