There are cars we buy because they're affordable, meet our needs, or have a solid spec sheet. Then there are those rare cars that represent a life goal — the ones we buy out of emotion or simply to treat ourselves. Without a doubt, the Mazda MX-5 belongs to that second category. With this car, the destination doesn't matter — it's the journey that counts. It's a car for enthusiasts and purists, capable of delivering a wide range of sensations behind the wheel.

For 2025, Mazda made a few minor tweaks to the car, including new wheels and a touchscreen central display. However, the real highlight is the addition of a 35th Anniversary Edition, boasting a unique character and several exclusive features. It's worth noting that this special version is only available with the soft-top model.

Trim Levels and Pricing

The 2025 Mazda MX-5 soft-top lineup consists of four different versions, starting with the GS model at $35,100. For that price, you get a well-equipped package including LED lighting, 17-inch wheels, and several advanced driver assistance features. Next is the GS-P, which delivers a more refined overall experience with a Bose sound system, heated seats, and improved insulation for greater ride comfort. It starts at $39,100. Then comes the GT trim, priced at $42,200, offering more luxury and an even more complete design. Finally, the 35th Anniversary Edition sits at the top of the range, starting at $43,700. However, production of this model is limited to just 230 units for Canada, making it one of the most exclusive vehicles Mazda has ever offered.

As for the RF (Retractable Fastback) version, it's only available in the GS-P and GT trims, priced at $42,100 and $45,200, respectively.

Category and Competitors

There aren't many options left in the affordable sports car segment — even fewer when it comes to convertibles. Thankfully, the MX-5 is still here, and that's a good thing, as it remains one of the most beloved cars in its category.

Rivals: Ford Mustang, Nissan Z, Subaru BRZ, Toyota GR 86

Design and Technology

As always, Mazda has done an excellent job with the 2025 MX-5, which is once again a real head-turner. I have to say I really like the new wheels introduced this year. But let's focus on the 35th Anniversary Edition, which offers a unique set of features. First, what immediately stands out is its beige soft top — something not available on other versions — along with its stunning Artisan Red paint. This special edition also includes beautiful 17-inch chrome wheels and several other exclusive touches.

The MX-5's interior is simple and elegant. It's neither too much nor too little — just right, especially since driving is what really matters here. Despite its compact size, the Japanese sports car is surprisingly comfortable and offers a fairly spacious cabin — and the same goes for its trunk. Finally, the MX-5 doesn't lack any essential tech features.

Performance

There's only one mechanical option for the Mazda MX-5 — and that's perfectly fine. The Japanese automaker's little sports car is powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. No turbo, no supercharger, no hybrid system — just a good old naturally aspirated engine with immediate response, just the way we like it. This little engine produces 181 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque, which may seem modest by modern standards. However, don't forget that the MX-5 is a very light and agile sports car. You can choose between a 6-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed automatic, and in both cases, power is sent to the rear wheels. Average fuel consumption is around 8.0 L/100 km, which is excellent for a car that's this fun to drive.

Weak Points

There isn't much to criticize about the Mazda MX-5, except perhaps that its infotainment system isn't as user-friendly as we'd like.

Strong Points

It's an elegant car that never fails to turn heads. The MX-5 is also very comfortable, with a surprisingly roomy interior. And above all, it's an absolute joy to drive — which, after all, is its whole reason for being.

Signature Element

With such accessible pricing, a rock-solid reputation, and a top-tier driving experience, you won't find a better value-for-money convertible sports car on the market.

Final Word

The Mazda MX-5 proves that you don't need to go exotic or extreme to build a solid reputation. It's an affordable little car that has always delivered on buyer expectations — and even exceeded them. After 35 years on the market, the MX-5 has become a true legend, and that's what makes it such a compelling model.
